News from job seekers

Looks like 2007 will be a big year for job seekers. Find out more with this surprising article.

One of my goals this year is professional growth. Do you have any suggestions on ways that I can make that happen?

That's a great goal to set. Professional growth can range from learning and developing specific skills, such as public speaking and business writing, to earning advanced degrees. It can also involve pursuing new experiences, such as sitting on a professional association board or managing people who don't report directly to you.

In order to focus in on the type of professional growth you'd like to achieve, think first about your reasons for setting this goal. Do you want to become more rounded in general by learning new skills, or is your goal to be promoted to the next level in your company? Once you know what is at the root of your desire for professional growth, you can choose the most logical things to strive for.

I've heard certain industries will have more jobs in the coming years. Can you suggest some resources for me to stay on top of my industry's future?

It is very insightful of you to think about the future of your industry. Inevitably every industry changes, transforms or becomes moribund. The more ahead of the curve you can stay, the easier it will be for you to change with the tide.

Every industry has two or three professional associations whose purpose is to provide resources and education for its members. Why not join one of these associations so that you can become more involved and develop leadership skills? Reading your industry's trade publications is also a good way to spot trends. Subscribing to a publication such as The Futurist (www.wfs.org/futurist.htm) is also helpful for staying abreast of future trends in a variety of industries.

Last, find a seasoned professional in your industry who may be willing to network with you or even mentor you. He or she will be bound to know the inside scoop about where your industry is headed.
